Glossary of NSC Academic Terminology

The following glossary is provided to help those unfamiliar with some of the more esoteric academic language and confusing terminology you may encounter in your interactions with various administration and student service departments at NSC, and while browsing the content of the college Web site.

Academic Recongition

Students are recognized for outstanding academic achievements by making the Dean's List or President's List at NSC.

Dean's List - Student must have 10 or more credits per quarter and 3.5 quarterly GPA.

President's List - Student must have accumulated 30 or more credits at NSC and a 3.8 or higher cumulative GPA.

Phi Theta Kappa Honorary

Phi Theta Kappa International Honorary Society recognizes academically outstanding students at two-year public and private colleges, and is the largest honorary society in the world. Chapters at each of the Seattle Community Colleges offer students a variety of activities and benefits


Per SCCD policy 315, advising is defined as helping students to understand the requirements of a program and to develop an educational plan directed at completion of the students' educational goals. NSC provides educational advising to new and enrolled students.

Counseling Services

Per SCCD policy 320, counseling services are defined as various services to help students reach their goals. NSC provides counseling services to prospective and enrolled students according to SCCD procedures 320.10-320.20.

You may change your courses from credit-to-audit or audit-to-credit in person at the Registration Front Counter Services only through the 8th week (6th week for summer) of the quarter.

Instructor’s signature for permission is required beginning the tenth day of the quarter (the eighth day for summer quarter).

Credit/Audit change is not available through the Online Services.

You do not receive credit or grades for audited classes. Audited classes cannot be used as a completed prerequisite.

Entry Codes

Entry codes are five-digit numbers issued to students for classes that have unmet prerequisites or require permission by an instructor. Entry codes are used for registration through Online Services. Once an entry code has been used, the computer will not accept the same code again. Entry codes are available for unmet prerequisites through Advising, or, for permission classes, from the division.

Full-Time/Part-Time Status

For academic, Social Security, VA, loan guarantor, etc., you must enroll in and complete at least 12 credits to be considered full-time; 6-11 credits is halftime; 5 or fewer is less than half-time.

Item Number

Four-digit number assigned to each class section. It is the number you use to register for a class or to add or drop a class.

New Students

New Students refers to those who want to apply and attend our college for the first time. Visit the New Student Information page.

A New Student should begin by following the Steps to Admission. This section walks through the steps of applying to the college and enrolling in courses. New students intending to obtain a transfer degree from NSC, will enroll in courses with the help of their advisor, usually during the New Student Orientation session.

Students who have their SID and temporary PIN, may register for classes during the open registration period for new students. Open registration for new students begins on Tuesday of the 8th week of the prior quarter.

A New Student that is unsure of what they want to study, can visit the Study Options section for an introduction to the different options that are available at NSC.

Official Enrollment

Official enrollment is the process of registering in classes and payment of tuition and fees. NSC requires official enrollment before a student may enter any class. For specific registration procedures see Steps to Admission & Enrollment.


Students will not be able to register for closed classes through the Online Services. If a class is full, and does not have an automated waiting list, students must get the instructor's permission by having the instructor sign the overload on the registration or Add/Drop form. If an automated waiting list exists, make sure to add yourself so you can be enrolled if a space occurs.

Students may also submit an email from an instructor serving as a permission to overload.
